Students set the Skyline Debate on Fire

The students of MAHE were on fire as they set the winning scene yet again this year, at CrossFire 2008, an annual intercollegiate debate hosted by Skyline College Sharjah. The event held on the 17th of April 2008, had student teams take stands on the topic of "Is democracy an ideal solution?". The students were given a mere 4 minutes to convert the audience to their notions and our students grabbed the Overall Trophy as well as the Best Defence Team title in their successful attempt.
Way to go...the trophy is home again!

OUT of the QUESTION - The B'Quizzed Win

B'Quizzed, held by BITS Pilani- (Dubai Campus) saw the MAHE students secure top positions. The 2008 version of this annual quiz competition was held at the host college on the 17th of April. 1 team of masterminds were declared runners up losing out only to the hosts themselves while the other managed to beat a stream of colleges to bag the 4th spot .

Dress to Impress - Swarovski Young Designer Awards

The Swarovski Young Designer of the Year Awards will take place at The Bride Show Dubai on Saturday, 26th April 2008. 2 designers from the Fashion Department, Nilam Khunti and Aasma Rafiq have been short listed to showcase their designs at these prestigious awards. Participating in the Upcoming Designers Category they will be battling it out with other amateur designers in the "The Art of Being Intimate". The students will display their dresses at the Zabeel Hall during the show from the 23rd - 25th.

MAHE Performers Steal Spotlight Again

The budding performers of Manipal University, Dubai campus fetched another victory yesterday at Stage Struck 2008- an intercollegiate drama competition, adding one more trophy to the existing collection of awards achieved by the University in the past.

The performers seized the second place in competition that was hosted by Rangmanch Theater Academy in association with American College of Dubai, losing the first place having secured by University of Wollongong, Dubai.

Displaying utmost theatrical talent on stage, students of Manipal University spellbound the audience by enacting an adaptation of the Russian play Fools, a light-hearted romantic comedy by Neil Eugene during the 1800s.

However, the award for the best actor in the individual play was honored to Akanksha Singh, second year student of Media and Communications, dramatizing the role of Sukhiya Popatlal - the mother of Roopmati (Aishwarya Shivkumar, third year student of Media and Communications). “I think we all performed brilliant. We wished we could’ve won the first place!” said Akanksha, all thrilled at the acknowledgement of her best performance in the play.

Support MAHE at STAGESTRUCK 2008

Students of MAHE will display their acting prowess at STAGESTRUCK 2008 today the 16th of April at the Sheikh Rashid Auditorium in Dubai. The event hosted by the Rangmanch Theater Academy in association with American College of Dubai is an endeavor undertaken to support the special needs and underprivileged children by sending across a social message through the plays.

Colleges will be given 30 minutes to woo the audience with their theatrical brilliance and at the same time create an awareness.

Theater enthusiasts who want to experience a world of make belief can contact Ms. Uma Prasad to book their tickets. Admission is open to all.

Manipal University - Dubai Campus has added another feather to its cap yesterday by winning the overall trophy at the Spring Fiesta 2008. The yearly competition has been won by MAHE Dubai two years in a row with participants grabbing all but one of the individual awards as well.

The dances were judged by Bosco of the famed Bollywood duo Bosco- Caesar. The Fashion Department students showcased their bridal wear creations, in the awareness walk.

The competitions opened to a cheering crowd with groups rooting for around 11 universities. The Western Category saw colleges dancing to tunes of the 70’s while the Eastern Category saw dancers shaking a leg in comic love.

DJ Abhijeet and a special performance by Imran Khan kept the audiences on their feet, with exhilaration escalating every second. So even when the event went on into the wee hours of the morning no one was complaining!

Yes, the media is all about sensationalism today!

“Wild ones attack seaside – 97 arrested,” began the first speaker Supriya Dominica of Team A, a third year student of Media and Communications during the heated debate held at MAHE auditorium on Thursday, 6th March 2008.

Two teams of four students each were all geared up to air their views on the topic: Is media today all about sensationalism? Participants of Team A: Miss Supriya (3^rd year Media and Communications), Miss Disha (1^st year Media and Communications), Miss Pooja P. (2^nd year Media and Communications) and Miss Ayesha (2^nd year Media and Communications) battled out their opponents of Team B to substantiate that the media indeed is all about sensationalism today.

Speakers were allotted four minutes each to present their understanding for the topic with an addition to a rebuttal of two minutes at the end for the teams to refute anyone’s argument put forward during the debate.

The forum moderated by Ms. Shubha, a faculty of Media and Communications, was assessed by a panel of four judges: Dr. Srikrishna Pandey (HOD of IT department), Dr. Sudhakar (Professor of Management) and Mr. Ashok Iyer (HOD of ID department).

The best speaker award was prized to Miss Pooja P. from Team A and Mr. Ritesh Jeswani (1^st year Media and Communications) from Team B.

“The debate was very challenging. We did attempt to put our points across but it is very obvious that media is all about sensationalism. What is true cannot be changed, isn’t it?”, said Ritesh from the defeated team but all jubilant for being awarded as one of the best speakers of the debate.

Entires for the 'Express Awards!' hosted by the Manipal Institute of Communication have to be sent in by the 18th of March 2008. There will be no extension of the deadline so make sure you courier in your entries well in advance.

No air travel will be provided by the host and foreign delegates will have to pay for their travel themselves, but food and accommodation will be provided by the institute. For further details on the rules and to download the registration form visit the Article-19 website.

MAHE Dubai held an in-house Solo Dance competition on Thursday, 28th February. Just as expected the event turned out to be a crowd puller, with breath-taking performances by students from various departments. After a string of spell-binding acts, the following winners emerged:

Auditions for Spring Fiesta '08

Students interested in participating the intercollegiate dance for Spring Fiesta (Eastern and Western) can come in for auditions on 4th or 5th March between 12-12:45pm in the college auditorium.

Please bring a CD along with the music for the dance you are going to audition for.

MAHE Dubai wins at UOWD Public Speaking Competition 2008

The University of Wollongong in Dubai that held its Public Speaking Competition 2008 yesterday, at the Knowledge Village, brought out the best of MAHE's public speakers, bagging laurels in varied categories.

MAHE Dubai Quiz 2008 Winners

Five teams battled it out with their mind and intelligence as they competed in several exciting rounds to win the MAHE Dubai Campus Quiz held on 21 February 2008.

Quiz Master Kailash Menon and Curator Sabir Haque designed a series of challenging rounds complete with audio visual questions, which got the teams and the audience scrambling to spark their brain cells. Audience members had interesting prizes for answering questions passed on by the teams on stage.

In the end, Mir Hassan (BBA) and Keegan Gerald Pereira (Media) won the Quiz. Aakanksha Singh (Media) and Melissa Khan (Media) took the runners up position. Dr. B. Ramjee, Director, MAHE Dubai Campus presented the Winner's trophy and the Runner Up Trophy to the students.

As a special incentive for the winners and runners up, they were chosen to take part on another live radio quiz on the popular FM station 101.6 City FM, on February 22, 2008. The Quiz is being broadcast live on 101.6 FM from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. (U.A.E time). It can also be heard online through live streaming on their official website 101.6 City FM.

Timer keeper Ms. H. S. Shubha and Scorer Ms. Seena Biju did a good job despite being busy keeping up with the teams. Kailash Menon did an excellent job, revealing a new talent as Quiz Master other being a faculty member of the Fashion Department. Sabeer Haque supported the Quiz Master with the audio-visual rounds and the presentation.

The quiz was just the start of the first of several events being organized by the Student Services Officer Mrs. Uma Prasad. Watch this blog for more details on next week's event.
